The city revealed on Thursday the names of 105 senior citizen centers that will close at month's end because of proposed state budget cuts - a list that left many New Yorkers angry.
"Closing these centers means ending a vital link between vulnerable older adults and the communities they helped to build," said Nancy Wackstein, executive director of the United Neighborhood Houses.
City Council members learned the names of targeted centers and shared them with their constituents.
"It's beyond frustrating," said Jessica Lappin (D-Manhattan), who heads the Council's Aging Committee and last year staved off the closure of 24 senior centers.
"We will be closing the doors to the centers and shutting out people who need these meals and companionship," she added.
The Lenox Hill Neighborhood House, a center in her upper East Side district, is one of those slated to shut. It serves 200 seniors seven days a week.
Gov. Cuomo proposed pulling funds to senior centers by deeming it discretionary spending. But state lawmakers are fighting to restore the money.
