Emily’s List Blog: Crisis Pregnancy Centers: An Unforgivable Deception and Righting a Wrong

Today, Council Member Jessica Lappin rights a wrong. Later this afternoon the New York City Council will vote on an important measure that addresses the problem of crisis pregnancy centers - places masquerading as health care providers but are instead efforts to derail women from making their own choices, by providing them with biased and inaccurate information.
Council Member Lappin’s bill will ensure these centers must be honest and clear about their pro-life ambitions. The New York Times Editorial Board endorsed the bill’s passage, saying that “centers that masquerade as licensed medical facilities but are, in fact, fronts for anti-abortion groups…interfere with the ability of women to make timely, well-informed decisions about their reproductive health.” Passing it, the Times continued, “would aid women in New York City, and perhaps inspire other cities.”
We first learned about Jessica when EMILY’s List Political Opportunity Program (POP) supported her campaign for the City Council in 2005. Our POP director Kate Coyne-McCoy says, “I watch in awe as Jessica Lappin juggles motherhood (she is 8 months pregnant with baby #2!), marriage and the demanding job of serving on the city council. She is an inspiration to women everywhere who think they can’t run and have a life at the same time. POP has been part of Lappin’s campaign from the beginning. Jessica took what she learned at our training and put it into action on the campaign trail… I was impressed at her tenacity on the campaign trail…She is one of the hardest working candidates I’ve met.”
As a young woman, and someone who is horrified by the deception of crisis pregnancy centers, I am so grateful for Jessica’s work and know we haven’t seen the last of her yet. Every day working at EMILY’s List I am awed by the women across this country who stand up to serve. Whether they volunteer, get involved in their community, or even run for elected office (look at what a difference city council makes!), women are taking action every day. Let Jessica’s work be a call to action -- check out the resources of our Stand Up and Serve campaign, and stand up to serve in your community, make a difference, and even right a wrong.
