City Councilwoman Jessica Lappin, who represents the Upper East Side of Manhattan, has written a letter to Joe Lhota, the new chairman of the MTA, to express her concern about the subway's broken escalators.

In her letter she specifically mentions what Fox 5 reported exclusively last Thursday: all seven escalators at the 53rd Street and Lexington Avenue subway stop broke down during the morning rush hour creating an overcrowded, dangerous situation.
Councilwoman Lappin also mentioned a privately maintained escalator at that station that has been broken for five years and won't be fixed until May.

Thursday, workers at the 63rd Street and Lexington Avenue subway station worked on another broken escalator.

The MTA said it shares the Lappin's concerns about the privately maintained escalators. A spokesman also said: "while we are still finalizing new protocol to fix equipment, NYC Transit has spent $1.3 million for electronic monitoring to alert repair crews when there's a problem."
This is the first that Fox 5 has heard of this equipment.
