Women Leaders Speak Out Against Stupak-Pitts Amendment

Council Member Lappin's Statement

We are on the brink of making history in our country with health care reform.  While I strongly believe in reforming our health care system, I am very concerned about the kind of history we are making.

This is a time of opportunity - a time to reform a broken system.  Not a time to attack and erode women's health and reproductive rights.

The Stupak-Pitt amendment would make it practically impossible for any insurer - public or private - to offer abortion coverage. This would mean that poor and middle class women would not be able to afford abortions. And even those who could afford private insurance would likely find themselves without coverage for this procedure.

Women have the right to consult with their doctors and make the decisions that are the right ones for their physical and mental health.

We have fought long and hard for these rights.  We can't allow them to be taken away by this amendment.

I'm proud to be able to stand with my Senator today and to speak out.

This is the biggest attack on women's rights in a generation. Let's march forward, not backward, in our fight.
